Orthotics are devices worn in your shoes that provide correction to your feet, helping them to function more efficiently. Poor foot function and alignment may be the cause of various pains such as foot pain, hip pain, knee pain and back pain.
Prescription orthotics may help relieve your pain by realigning and stabilizing the bones in your feet, restoring your natural walking pattern.
Materials used in functional foot orthoses range from a flexible plastic to a soft foam. The decision will be made by your podiatrist and is dependant on footwear, foot function and activity. This material has to provide enough rigidity to support the foot while simultaneously offering the foot the right amount of flexibility to properly absorb ground reaction forces.
When you initially wear your orthotics they may feel different or uncomfortable. This feeling is quite normal – keep in mind that orthotics change the way you walk and feel. As time passes, your orthotics should feel comfortable and should be a pleasure to wear.
Start by wearing your orthotics in your athletic shoes for walking only. Wear them for a period of two to four hours, for two consecutive days. If they are reasonably comfortable, wear your orthotics for your sports activities.
