Ingrown Toe Nails
Known to physicians as onychocryptosis, ingrown toe nails are a common, painful condition that occur when skin on one or both sides of a nail grows over the edges of the nail, or when the nail itself grows into the skin.
Some ingrown toenails are chronic, with repeated episodes of pain and infection.Ingrown toenails develop for many reasons such as direct trauma, ongoing repetitive trauma (i.e. soccer/running), cutting of the toenail incorrectly or a congenital problem with the nail size and/or shape, causing the nail to grow into the skin.
If there is inflammation, swelling and pain present, the majority of the time the ingrown nail won’t resolve without professional treatment. Your podiatrist will remove the nail with a minor in-office surgical procedure, flush the area with antiseptic, dress the toe, and refer you to your GP if antibiotics are required.
There is minor permanent surgery offered for stubborn ingrown nails. It involves a local anaesthetic and removal of part of the nail bed. Please consult your podiatrist for more information.
